What is a color picker?
A color picker is a tool that lets you select a color visually and get the exact values you need for HTML, CSS, design systems, or print workflows. This advanced color picker uses an interactive hue wheel and a saturation–value square (the same HSV model used in many professional apps), then converts that color into HEX, RGB, HSL, HSV/HSB, CMYK, and HWB in real time.
Designers use it to lock brand accents. Developers use it to paste codes into stylesheets and design tokens. Marketers use it to keep ads and landing pages consistent. Everything runs locally on your device - no account and no image upload.
How many HEX color codes are there?
There are exactly 16,777,216 possible 24-bit HEX colors.
A six-digit hex code #RRGGBB encodes red, green, and blue from 00 to FF (0–255).
That is 256 × 256 × 256 unique combinations. With alpha (HEXA), you also control transparency for overlays and glass effects.
You do not need to memorize them. Drag the wheel, type a HEX value, or hit Random - the picker maps every selection into the formats below.
Color formats explained (HEX, RGB, HSL, HSV, CMYK, HWB)
HEX / HEXA
The default language of the web. Example: #3B82F6. HEXA adds an alpha channel (e.g. #3B82F6FF).
Ideal for CSS, design tokens, and most style guides.
RGB / RGBA
Red, green, and blue from 0–255. rgb(59, 130, 246) is the same blue as the HEX above.
RGBA adds opacity from 0–1 for translucent UI layers.
HSL / HSLA
Hue, saturation, and lightness. Useful when you want to lighten or darken a brand color without leaving the same hue family. Many modern CSS workflows prefer HSL for theme variants.
HSV / HSB
Hue, saturation, and value (brightness). This is the model behind the wheel and square on this page. Value measures brightness from black; it differs slightly from HSL lightness, which passes through pure color to white.
CMYK
Cyan, magenta, yellow, and key (black) - the print model. Browser conversion is an approximation of on-screen RGB, so treat CMYK here as a starting point for print discussions, not a final press proof.
HWB
Hue, whiteness, and blackness. Supported in modern CSS and handy for mixing toward white or black while keeping hue fixed.
How to convert HEX to RGB (and back)
Each pair of hex digits maps to 0–255. For #3B82F6: 3B → 59, 82 → 130, F6 → 246,
so rgb(59, 130, 246). Going the other way, convert each channel to two hex digits and prefix #.
This picker does the conversion instantly whenever you move the wheel, edit HEX, or drag a slider.
Color harmonies and the generator
After you pick a base color, the generator builds related sets so you can test UI states and brand systems faster:
- Shades - darker steps of the same hue (hover states, depth).
- Tints - lighter steps (backgrounds, subtle chips).
- Complementary - opposite hue for strong contrast.
- Analogous - neighboring hues for calm, related palettes.
- Triadic / Tetradic - evenly spaced hues for balanced multi-color systems.
- Monochromatic - one hue, varied saturation and lightness.
Click any swatch to make it the active color and refresh every format card.
Why developers bookmark a color picker
- One click to copy the exact string you need in CSS or tokens.
- Wheel + HEX input + sliders without switching apps.
- Alpha support for glassmorphism, overlays, and disabled states.
- Private: values never leave your browser for cloud processing.
- Same privacy model as our image compressor and image tools.
Quick reference: common HTML color names
Browsers still understand classic named colors. Prefer HEX/RGB in production CSS, but names remain useful for demos and docs.
